The Werner Baby Story
written by Amy Werner
My son Joey was going to be 2 years old in 2 months, and my husband and
I decided we wanted to try for another child. We were planning on
waiting for Joey to turn two, but after talking to other people, they
told us it might be harder to get pregnant the second time
around. We had no problem getting pregnant with Joey. First
month and we were pregnant. So we started trying early.
Little did we know what was in store for us.
We started trying and on Mother's day weekend I started spotting for
two days. I figured I wasn't pregnant and we would have to try
again. Everyone was right. Well the spotting went away, but
the tests kept coming back negative. Finally a week later,
we got a positive test. I was more tired and sick then I
ever was with Joey. I just thought every pregnancy is
different, boy was I right.
I went to my 8 week check up with Rita-Marie and everything seemed
fine. Then she checked for a heartbeat. Well she couldn't
find one. She said that a fetal heart beat can usually be heard
in the office between 9-12 weeks. It is not uncommon at 8 weeks
to be unable to find it. So I was sent for an ultrasound that
same day. I
cried the entire time between the appointment and the ultrasound.
I called my family, letting them know what was going on.
We got to the ultrasound and had to wait, since we didn't have an
appointment. Once we got in I had to go get changed and my
husband talked to the technician. I didn't want to see the
ultrasound screen, in case of the worst. I saw a smile on my
husband's face, which suddenly turned to a laugh. The
technician's mouth dropped open. I said "What's wrong, what do
you see?" she replied, "Do twins run in your family?".
Immediately I was worried, but for new reasons.
Everyone was excited to hear the wonderful news.
The pregnancy went by really well. My son dealt with not being
carried and started to help a little more, but he was still so
young. I had a lot of help from friends and family, because of
the many doctor appointments. Traveling to Pennsylvania to visit
family had to stop after Halloween. My family had to come and see
me. Thanksgiving and Christmas were held at my house.
35 weeks came along and Christmas was right around the corner. I
talked to Sharon and asked when can I have these babies. All of
their tests had come back that they were healthy. She told me to
try and make it until 37 weeks, which seemed like forever.
Christmas came and went with some contractions, but nothing that was
labor.
December 26th was a nice day, and everything seemed normal, no
contractions. I was 36 weeks and 4 days along. We went to
Target, and Wendy's for lunch. Later that afternoon my blood
pressure went up, so I laid on my left side for a half hour. It
went down for about 5 minutes but immediately went back up. I got
scared and called the Adler Center. I was told to go to labor and
delivery immediately to be checked out.
The emergency room checked my blood pressure, which was
elevated They decided to admit me for observation. My
blood pressure went back down, but surprise! I was a centimeter
dilated and having contractions. Sharon was on call and told the
nurse to keep me to see if I progressed at all. Well an hour or
so later I had gone to 3 centimeters. My contractions
weren't regular enough, so Sharon broke my water. It still didn't
help so after the epidural and a few more hours, I got some
pitocin. At 4 in the morning the twins were ready to be
born. After pushing only 15 minutes Katelyn Marie Werner, and
Robert John Werner entered the world. Katie weighed 5 lbs. 13 oz,
Bobby weighed 6 lbs. 7 oz. These were the first twins to be born
in the new operating room. I was able to get no stitches
and no C-section. They were happy, healthy babies and were able
to come home with me after the 3 days hospital stay for all of us.
Now they are 9 months old, crawling, eating table food, and saying Mom
and Dad. We are a happy, healthy, little bit bigger than we
expected family.
