A Note From Dr. Adler
Many women that come to our practice have indicated an interest in
finding an appropriate weight loss program for themselves. I have been
researching several different weight loss programs and have found one
in particular that I would like to recommend to my patients. I am in
the process of writing a detailed article about the diet for our
October E-Newsletter. Look for my article in our next issue!

Planning a Family? Join us for a Talk on Preconception! |
 |
Many women have questions about what they should be
doing to prepare themselves to become pregnant. Should they be taking
vitamins? Should they be eating certain types of foods? Should they
stop exercising at the gym? ...and many more. Pam Becker, one of our
midwives, will be hosting this month's Women's Health Seminar on
Preconception. She will be providing information about things you can
do while trying to become pregnant.
The seminar will be held on Monday, September 27th from
6:30pm-7:30pm at our Woodbridge Office. Please feel free to bring a
friend! Light refreshments will be provided.

A Wonderful Ending |
 |
We I have a sad beginning and a wonderful ending. In
2000 I had a son, Kyle, that was "stillborn" according to the doctor's
statement. So a year and three months later, you could imagine how my
husband, my then 5 year old son and I felt when we learned I was
pregnant again. In fact we didn't even discuss it for three days - we
didn't really even speak. I was excited, my faith had led me to believe
that no matter what, God always has a plan and even though I may not
like it, that is the way he has planned it for us. So, with that faith
I was certain that NOTHING would happen to this baby.
Of course I didn't go back to the doctor/midwife that
had delivered my son, Kyle. I actually started with a new doctor,
Doctor Anderson, who was wonderful, unfortunately, he only delivered at
one hospital, the same in which Kyle was born, which is not someplace
you would want to go back to remember and face again. So with that, I
asked Dr. Anderson, who knew my situation, for a referral to someone he
trusted. He gave me a name and I thought I would try a couple of others
just to feel everything out and make sure I got a great doctor. I made
trips to Maryland and Richmond, (well, half-way to Richmond, I decided
that was really just too far) and just couldn't find a doctor that made
me feel 100% positive about him.

Communication: The Key to Developing an Open Relationship
Between Mothers and Daughters |
 |
Any loving caregiver--married or single, related or not-
can be an effective sexuality educator. For simplicity, we refer to all
caregivers as parents. Children learn their values by constantly
watching the people who care for them-by seeing what you do and how you
act. Children begin learning about sexuality when they are infants, and
they are sensitive to a parent's silent signals. By the time children
start school, they already know a lot about human sexuality, especially
their own.
This document is about ways you can teach your child about sexuality.
Sexuality education is not just about sex. Sexuality education includes
sex, but also the roles, behaviors and values people associate with
being a man or woman.
Sexuality is both physical and emotional. You can see it
in everything we do: the clothes we wear, the way we walk, the way we
talk, how we show affection and in many everyday events. Good sexuality
education is based on the idea that loving and caring parents actively
discover a child's needs for information and then find ways to fill
those needs. Even adolescents in their mid-teens are still learning
from you. (Yes, you can talk to your teenager about sexuality!)

Employee of the Month - Sharon Lenton, CNM |
 |
I have worked here at The Adler Center for three and a
half years seeing both obstetrical and gynecological patients. Prior to
my position here, I have worked in Georgia, Massachusetts, St. Thomas
and California. Originally, I am from England. I left there eleven and
a half years ago to come and work in the USA for about 1-3 years.....
My hobbies are mainly (other than shopping, of course),
crafty types, as I love "making things". I have also been known to
dabble in a woodwork project or two. When my eyes need a change of
scenery, traveling is on my list of things to do - vacation time is
never wasted if I've been on a plane to go somewhere.
I recently finished a twelve week basic Spanish course. I am nowhere
near fluent, but I do try. Perhaps one time I'll spend my vacation in a
Spanish speaking country!
