Our Exciting Natural Childbirth Experience
written by Karen Rivers

Going through labor for the first time was an unforgettable experience that I have learned from.  I prepared myself for childbirth by completing a Lamaze session, and also reading lots and lots of very detailed literature.  However, my mind was already set on breathing through every contraction and receiving the wonderful Epidural that you always hear about.

I remember sitting on the couch with my husband, who was timing my inconsistent contractions, and wondering if this was really it just false labor.  I must have started timing these painful things around 8 PM on the evening of June 27th, 2002.  MasonI distinctly remember my Lamaze instructor telling us to stay at home as long as you can, because if you’re only 2-4 centimeters dilated then chances are you might get sent back home.  Well, I took that advice maybe a little too seriously!  By 11 PM, I just couldn’t take it anymore.  We jumped into the car, and of course, once I got into the car my contractions were consistently coming every 3 minutes.  So, my husband hurried all the way to Potomac Hospital, which was a good 25 minutes from home.

We finally got to the delivery room, and the first thing I asked for was an Epidural.  I was begging for something to relieve the pain, but unfortunately the nurse had some bad news; she told me that I was 9 centimeters dilated and she would have to break my water, and soon I would start pushing.  Well, wait a minute!!!  I was not planning on having a natural delivery, nor could I tolerate more intense pain.  Thankfully, Rita-Marie gave me the courage that I needed with her positive team player attitude.  She promised me that I would have this baby in my arms in 15 minutes.  Fifteen minutes later, at approx. 12:45 AM, Rita Marie earned her keep.  My beautiful baby boy was in my arms, a healthy 6 lbs 12 oz.  After a very short period of time I understood why the Lamaze instructors preach natural childbirth. While I never would have volunteered for it, it was truly worth it.  I had no drug side affects, and I could walk back and forth to the nursery to see Mason whenever I wanted to.  Nobody could believe that I was up and about only minutes after having the baby.  I certainly earned the “superwoman” title that was given to me by the nursing staff.Mason Rivers

The pain has been forgotten, as they always say, and I am ready for my second natural childbirth experience.
