The Zone Diet by Dr. Adler
Many of our patients have asked us to recommend a dietary plan for
them. As you know, there are many diets promoted, such as the Adkins
Diet, the South Beach diet, the Mediterranean diet, and others. All of
them work, however, as soon as we stop the diet, the tendency is to
regain the lost weight because old habits are difficult to break and
many of us will resume our old dietary practices. The diet that I feel
promotes not only weight loss, but health and wellness is called the
Zone diet.
The Zone diet or "OmegaZone Dietary Program" was created
by Dr. Barry Sears who is one of the leading authorities in the field
of drug delivery systems and dietary control of hormonal response. He
began the research which led to the development of the Zone Diet
because he wanted to do what he could to maintain his own heart since
all the males on his father's side of the family died of heart disease
in their early 50's.

For this month's seminar on osteoporosis, we have combined

demonstrate how to perform the test that measures bone density and what
types of results she gives to our providers for diagnosis and
treatment. Representatives from Women Fit Total Fitness Center will be

Happiness in Hard Times - Along Came Jessica McCormick |
 |
We were overjoyed when we found out we were expecting
what I'd like to call our second "Adler Center Baby" due early June
2004. Our first healthy baby girl, Megan, was born on September 15,
2002, and was delivered by The Adler Center's then midwife, Susan
Pierson.
This time around we were just as excited but couldn't
help but feeling a bit like it was all "routine" - when we got the bad
news! My husband, Cyrus, a reserve with the NAVY, was called to active
duty in March of 2004 and sent to Iraq, where he still is, and
therefore hasn't yet met his youngest daughter. It's been very tough
not having my husband here throughout my last trimester but I found
comfort in knowing how much the staff - including the nurses - at The
Adler Center truly cares for their patients and I started to really
look forward to my prenatal visits.

Osteoporosis and Exercise - by Women Fit Total Fitness Center |
 |
Physical activity can help prevent, minimize the effects
and reduce your chances of developing osteoporosis. Many women are
affected by this disorder in which bones become thinner over time, more
porous and less able to support the body. There are two very important
types of exercises needed to continue building and maintaining bone
mass and density: weight bearing and resistance training.
Weight bearing exercises such as walking, jogging, running and climbing
require your bones and muscles to work against gravity. Resistance
Training is exercises using free weights, weight machines and other
muscle strengthening equipment. Strength training also increases muscle
mass, balance and strength, all of which reduces the chance of falls
which could lead to fractures. Remember to consult your physician
before you start an exercise program. Women Fit Total Fitness Center
has locations in Woodbridge and Manassas. Check out their website at www.womenfit.com.
Women Fit Total Fitness Center is co-hosting our
October Women's Health Seminar on Osteoporosis.

Employee of the Month - Pam Becker, CNM |
 |
Pamela Becker, CNM, joined The Adler Center in August of
2002. Originally from the midwest, she earned her Bachelor of Science
in Nursing from Northwestern University School of Nursing in Chicago,
Illinois in 1982. By the time she had graduated from nursing school,
Pam knew that she would specialize in women's health and obstetrics.
Five years later, she completed her Masters Degree in Science and
Certificate of Midwifery at the Columbia University Graduate School of
Nursing in New York, NY.
After living and practicing for 15 years as a midwife in
Vermont and New Hampshire, she realized that she missed warm weather
and city life. She moved with her husband and kids to Northern Virginia
to join The Adler Center. Pam's interests include holistic health,
cooking and the theater but mostly she is busy raising her four
children ages 6 to 16.
