Are You Stressed Out? Here are 5 Ways to Find Relief

adapted from the Women's Health Today magazine, Fall 2005

Do you feel as if your life is one endless track meet? You're not alone. Millions of women, whether working, raising a family-or doing both-say they're in the same bind. Uncontrolled stress can lead to serious health problems, including fatigue, depression and insomnia. Some experts suspect it may even set the stage for heart disease-the number-one cause of death in women.

The good news? With better time management, rearranged priorities and some coping skills, you'll improve your health and find more time for loved ones and yourself.

    Identifying Your Hot Buttons

    Does this sound like you?

    • Always first: First person awake, first one at work, first to hit the accelerator when the light turns green.
    • Always last: Last one to bed, last to leave work, last to arrive at social gatherings.

If you answered yes, it's no wonder you may feel grouchy, angry or resentful much of the time. Perhaps you're having trouble sleeping or find you've either lost your appetite or just can't stop eating. Maybe unhealthy outlets like smoking or drinking alcohol are your preferred way to unwind.

Women's Health Seminar: "Keeping Yourself Healthy Through Good Nutrition, Vitamins and Supplements"

Here at the Adler Center we are always asked during visits "How can I lose weight?", or "What daily vitamin is best?", or "How can I feel more energy during the day and sleep better at night?". We have some well developed answers to these questions and many many more. This seminar will focus on educating you about the new food group pyramid and what is considered a "good well-balanced diet". Also we will help you to determine the right combination of Vitamins and Supplements needed throughout your lifespan. Did you know that certain nutrition changes, vitamins or supplements could help you to lose weight or prepare yourself for an upcomming pregnancy or help to make your transition into menopause go smoother? Have you ever wondered what you could do to keep yourself healthy from the risks of osteoporosis, diabetes or heart disease? Then this seminar is developed just for you.

Patricia Gould, CNM, will be our speaker. The seminar will be held on Tuesday, November 15th in our Woodbridge Office from 6:30pm-7:30pm.

Celebration of Life: Baby Dalton's Story

Hi, my name is Jacqueline Lear and I am 42 years old. I'm writing this story because I am a first time mother. This story begins with choosing the best OB/GYN doctor - I consulted with friends and family members and they referred me to the Adler Center. My initial visit to the office was in October 2004 to get the final result of a pregnancy test that proved to be positive; I was going to be a mom.

Not having experience in the field; there was going to be a lot of questions because this was a whole new life that was forming in my womb. I had a few symptoms such as extreme tiredness. I left the office with my blue baby bag filled with information on pregnancy and my card they had given me to record all of my stats. My second visit was in November and I got to hear my baby's heartbeat for the first time.

    “One of My Greatest Achievements!”

    Written by Rita-Marie Goudreau, CNM
For those of you who know me through your visits here at the Adler Center you know I try my best to educate you about the importance of exercise and good nutrition. If a patient is overweight and open to listen to my perspective I try to encourage her to join a weight loss program that supports you though weekly meetings and a healthy exercise regimen (Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig are two of my favorite recommendations). I am the first to admit that I occasionally do not practice what I preach so I was reluctant earlier this year when one of our nurses who is a good friend of mine (Tara Ryba) talked me into running a 10K race (6.4 miles) in Richmond, VA with her in April. I have never run more than the 1 mile required by my PE teacher in 10th grade (and even then I walked the last 2 laps!). Most of my exercise programs have been self- regulated. I have never joined a gym or been on a strict program until Tara talked me into running that race.

This month on November 15th we are doing our seminar on “Women’s Health and Nutrition”. Please bring a friend and let us motivate and inspire you to become a healthy woman through diet, exercise and the right vitamins and supplements.

Employee of the Month - Lisa Abraham, Receptionist

I've been with the Adler Center for two years now. It's been a new and wonderful experience working in obstetrics and gynecology and very different since I've been working for Family Practice and Pediatrics at my previous jobs. I work as a receptionist at the Adler Center and enjoy assisting patients in whatever way I can.

I was born in New York but lived in Puerto Rico for 13 years; therefore I can speak Spanish fluently. My parents and grandparents are Puerto Rican. My husband and I have two boys - one 11 years old and one who is attending his second year at Shenandoah University. My favorite hobbies are cooking and gardening which I find very therapeutic but don't have as much time as I wish to do them.

    Share Your Baby Story!

What is a baby story? Well, it's a story that is written by a new mom which tells about her experience with delivering her baby through the Adler Center. By sharing these stories, new patients can see what delivering with the Adler Center is like, family and friends can read about your birth and see pictures on our website, you can brag about your experience through labor and help other mothers prepare by allowing them to read about your experience.

We encourage moms that have delivered not only recently, but even if they delivered with us several years ago to share their story(s). It's always interesting to see what other people go through during their pregnancy and delivery. Click here to read some of the baby stories already published in our E-Newsletters and on our website.

So far, our subscribers have loved reading our baby stories each month. Many people have told us that they can't wait until the next E-Newsletter to read another! If your baby was delivered by The Adler Center, and you would like to share your experience on our E-Newsletter and website, we urge you to write an article and email it to us. Don't forget to send a picture to go along with the article!

    We Value Your Input....

What topics would you like to learn about? We select topics for this E-Newsletter based on concerns we hear about in the office and the latest medical news. If you have a health issue you'd like to read about, a seminar topic you'd like to hear about, or any suggestions about how to better our practice - please let us know. We welcome your suggestions and comments!
