Essential Fatty Acids |
 |
written by Monica Byrne,CNM
Ensuring adequate maternal and prenatal nutrition is an easy,
practical, and inexpensive way to optimize pregnancy and neonatal
outcomes. Essential Fatty Acids are a very important aspect of
nutrition, which can significantly influence a woman's health status
both during her childbearing years and beyond.
Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs)
EFAs are a necessary component of the basic human cell. There are two
main categories of fatty acids, the omega 3 fatty acids and the omega 6
fatty acids. Both are polyunsaturated and considered to be "good fats"
for the body. EFAs must be consumed in the diet because the human body,
mother or baby, cannot make enough of them for optimal function on its
own. It is a good balance between the two types of fatty acids that
results in the best health status.

Women's Health Seminar - Birth Control Pill Cycling |
 |
Did you know that it is now possible to have your
menstrual cycle only 4 times a year instead of the usual 13? Many women
would like to have their cycle less often. If you're planning a
vacation or special event, you can now manipulate your cycle to better
fit your lifestyle. This extended-cycle contraception has been approved
by the FDA and has been shown to be safe and effective in thousands of
women. Sharon Lenton, CNM, will be discussing how this method works and
whether it may be right for you.
The seminar will be held in our Stafford office on
Wednesday, May 18, 2005 from 6:30pm-7:30pm. Be sure to bring a friend!
Light refreshments will be served.

My Picture Perfect Pregnancy |
 |
written by Jennifer Killmer
Luckily I had what I considered to be a picture perfect pregnancy. No
complications, no morning sickness. The worst I had was fatigue. I
never took any child birth classes because I was having an epidural and
really didn't feel like sitting through two long classes.
I had an appointment on my due date, which was November
30th. Rita-Marie said that I was still on 1cm dilated and 75% effaced -
the same that I was the week before. She said that if I didn't have the
baby by next week, we would need to start talking induction. She told
me to take some sort of pills (I don't remember what - I wasn't really
listening), walk a lot and have lots of sex. Well I was in no hurry to
have the baby because I wasn't uncomfortable, so I did nothing that she
recommended. She said she would be on-call the next day in case I
happened to go into labor. Well, I wasn't planning on it, but my son
had his own ideas.

We Have Phlebotomists In Our Offices for Your Convenience |
 |
We at the Adler Center are always looking for ways to better
accomodate our patient's needs. In the past, whenever a patient needed
to have bloodwork drawn, she would have to go to an outside drawing
station. A lot of times our patients don't have time to make another
stop on the way home and would end up not having the labwork done. When
Quest offered to provide us with a phlebotomist in both of our office
locations, we jumped at the opportunity. Having this service in our
office has not only made it convenient for our patients , but has also
enabled our providers to obtain the information they need to be able to
provide the appropriate follow-up care.
Both Delta, in our Woodbridge office, and Kate, in our
Stafford office, are wonderful assets to our practice. If you need
labwork drawn, you can either have it done before or after your
appointment, or you can be seen on a walk-in basis. The following hours
are available:
- From 8:00am-12:pm and from 1:30pm-4:00pm patient care or
walk-in labs are drawn
- From 8:00am-11:00am and from 1:30pm-3:30pm glucose draws are
available.
- No labs can be drawn between the hours of 12:30pm-1:30pm
- If you are a self-pay patient, your labs cannot be drawn in
our office; you will need to go directly to an outside drawing station

Employee of the Month - Sara Hernandez, Medical
Assistant/Radiologic Technician |
 |
I've worked for the Adler Center for about 3 1/2 years
now. I'm a Medical Assistant as well as a Medical Technician
responsible for both nursing functions and performing bone density
tests on our patients. I'm was born in Mexico and can speak Spanish
fluently. I've been able to help a lot of our Spanish speaking patients
by translating for them and trying to bridge any language barriers they
may have. I also enjoy being able to get to know our patients and see
the babies that we've delivered.
I have a five year old son, Alex, who is in
kindergarden. In my free time, I enjoy going to church and spending
time with Alex and watching him play soccer.

church group, health spa, school, company, or any other group that
would like to hear about women's health issues or osteoporosis, needs a
speaker, please contact Felecia Chinn at (703) 680-2035.
