Start the New Year Right by Practicing Prevention
I'm
sure many of you will agree that after the holidays we all feel the
need to "get back on track" and lose those few pounds we gained by
eating all that wonderful food! One of your New Year's Resolutions
should be to practice prevention and promote good health for both you
and your family. Promoting good health means being able and willing to
do the things that make you healthy, such as eating a healthy diet,
exercising, minimizing stress, and seeking treatment and cures when
health problems arise. Start by doing the basics, and as your knowledge
about good health increases, so will your options for staying healthy:
- It is important to get regular health
checkups. Have you had your annual pap smear, breast and pelvic exam?
If not, schedule
it today.
- Keep a family health history; learn the
diseases and health complications that affected your parents, your
grandparents and their siblings.
- Exercise regularly; get at least 30
minutes of brisk activity at least four days a week or more.
- Try to be active when you can; park your
car a reasonable walking distance from where you plan to go and take
the stairs whenever possible.
- Practice self-assessments such as monthly
self- breast exams, watch moles or various markings on your body and
note any changes over time and discuss them with your health care
provider.
- Wear sunscreen
- Drink plenty of water
- Enjoy alcohol in moderation only and
avoid all tobacco products

A Proactive Approach to Cancers |
 |
Written by Alf K. Adler, M.D.
The American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates that more than 192,000
women in this country were diagnosed with breast cancer in the year
2001. In addition, 80,300 women were diagnosed with a gynecologic
cancer that same year. Some of these cancers are preventable, some are
not. In those that are not preventable, early diagnosis and treatment
dramatically increases the odds of survival. Women need to understand
their own risk factors in order to take a proactive approach to
prevention, early detection and treatment.
Cancers of women are divided into those that
involve the reproductive tract (vulva, vagina, cervix, uterus,
fallopian tubes and ovaries) and those that involve the breast. The
former cancers are known as gynecologic cancers.

Women's Health Seminar: Preparing for Labor and Delivery |
 |
Our next Women's Health Seminar will be
hosted by Monica Byrne, CNM on February 22 in our Woodbridge office

prepare for your labor and delivery. This will be a question and answer
session - be sure to bring a list of questions you would like to
discuss. We do have limited time so remember to keep your questions
brief. Bring your labor partner! This information is important for them
as well. Light refreshments will be served.

Employee of the Month, Gloria Escobar - Receptionist |
 |
I have been at the Adler Center for a year
as a receptionist. I am fluent in both English and Spanish. One of the
things I like most about my job is getting to know our patients and
their families. Prior to joining the Adler Center I worked for various
medical offices and have a total of ten years of experience as a
receptionist and medical assistant. My goal is to learn billing for a
change of pace.
I am a proud mother of three - two boys and
a girl. They tend to keep me busy with shopping, movies and skating. I
am very close to my family and enjoy spending time with them as often
as possible.

Our patients can now download our registration forms, HIPAA forms, our
Financial policy, our Verbal Consent Form and our HIV Consent Form in
order to fill them out prior to their new or annual appointments.
Coming Soon....articles on both pregnancy and gynecology. We hope to
have our entire website in both English and Spanish in the near future.

Share Your Baby Story! |
 |
What is a baby story? Well, it's a story
that is written by a new mom which tells about her experience with
delivering her baby through the Adler Center. By sharing these stories,
new patients can see what delivering with the Adler Center is like,
family and friends can read about your birth and see pictures on our
website, you can brag about your experience through labor and help
other mothers prepare by allowing them to read about your experience.
We encourage moms that have delivered not only recently, but even if
they delivered with us several years ago to share their story(s). It's
always interesting to see what other people go through during their
pregnancy and delivery. Click
here to read some of the baby stories already published in our
E-Newsletters and on our website.
So far, our subscribers have loved reading our baby stories each month.
Many people have told us that they can't wait until the next
E-Newsletter to read another! If your baby was delivered by The Adler
Center, and you would like to share your experience on our E-Newsletter
and website, we urge you to write an article and email it to us. Don't forget
to send a picture to go along with the article!

We Value Your Input.... |
 |
What topics would you like to learn about?
We select topics for this E-Newsletter based on concerns we hear about
in the office and the latest medical news. If you have a health issue
you'd like to read about, a seminar topic you'd like to hear about, or
any suggestions about how to better our practice - please let us know.
We welcome your suggestions and comments!
