Vaginitis and Sexually Transmitted Diseases - What Are They
and How Are They Treated? |
 |
written by Sharon Lenton, CNM
Vaginitis is inflammation (or irritation) of a woman's vagina caused by
pathogenic (harmful) bacteria or non-pathogenic bacteria. This is a
very common condition with many possible causes, affecting up to one
third of women at some point during their life time. The vagina
normally has a discharge of up to one teaspoon a day, which can be
clear, cloudy or whitish. It should not smell or itch. This is the
vagina's way of cleansing itself. Many factors can affect the discharge
and upset the vagina's natural balance.
- antibiotics
- douching or using scented feminine products
- spermicides and/or condoms
- sexual intercourse (semen)
- use of sexual toys or diaphragms and not washing correctly
between uses
- sexually transmitted diseases
- changes in hormonal balance such as pregnancy, breast feeding
or menopause
Diagnosis is accomplished through history, vaginal exam, and
microscopic exam of sample of discharge and cultures.
Yeast Infection
This is also known as candidiasis. Yeast normally lives in the vagina
in small numbers, but due to changes in the balance of the vagina, the
yeast proliferate and cause symptoms. The symptoms are itching and
burning of the vagina and vulva which may be worse during urination or
with sexual intercourse. The vulva may also be red and swollen. A
white, curdy discharge with no odor may be present. Even though
approximately 75% of women may experience a yeast infection, it is not
considered a sexually transmitted disease.

The Ward Baby Story |
 |
Where to begin???? I've had 8 pregnancies and 5 children
born...4 of whom were delivered by Dr. Adler. As a young mother coming
to a new area, I was delighted to find a compassionate, incredibly
intelligent and understanding doctor. Unfortunately, my first
experience with Dr. Adler was for a D&C after my first miscarriage.
I had only been through my initial OB appointment and hadn't even had a
chance to meet with him. Our encounter was brief but truly memorable. I
remember his honest and heartfelt concern not only for my physical
well- being, but also for the emotional roller coaster my husband and I
were experiencing. I knew immediately that he was the doctor for me.

Employee of the Month - Carron Young, Nursing Supervisor |
 |
I have been working with The Adler Center for about 6
1/2 years now. I grew up in Fairfax City but have lived in Woodbridge
for almost 18 years. I obtained a bachelors' degree in nursing from
George Mason University in 1996, having begun when my youngest child
was two. I have three children - a son who is a junior at James Madison
University, a son who is a senior in high school and a daughter who is
a junior in high school. In my "spare time" I enjoy gardening, cooking,
reading and indoor soccer.
My role at The Adler Center involves notifying patients
who need special testing and treatment, triaging patient needs and
assisting with the management of our high risk obstetrical patients. I
also facilitate staff training, assisting them with unique situations
that arise in the office. I find assisting patients through challenging
circumstances especially rewarding.
