- Our midwives' training is not limited to pregnancy
alone, they also do annual pelvic and breast examinations, Pap tests,
and screening for infections.
- Our office offers Bone Density Testing for men as
well as women.
- The Birth Control Pill (BCP) can have many health
benefits such as decreasing your risk of anemia, ovarian cancer,
uterine cancer and preventing pregnancy.
- The U.S. Surgeon General recently reported that you
can help prevent many health problems by engaging in a moderate amount
of physical activity (such as taking a brisk, 30-minute walk) on most
days of the week. Strive to maintain the body weight recommended by a
health professional, since excess fat may stimulate estrogen production
which increases your risk of breast cancer.

Atrophic Vaginitis |
 |
written by Rita-Marie Goudreau, CNM
What is Atrophic Vaginitis?
Atrophic Vaginitis is a skin condition of the vulva and vagina. It
occurs when a hormone called estrogen is lacking in the body. Atrophic
vaginitis can occur at any age. It most commonly occurs in women who
are menopausal and in women whose ovaries have stopped making estrogen.
It can also be seen in women who are breast feeding, using
Depo-Provera, or have had their ovaries removed. Decreasing estrogen
levels can cause skin changes in the vulvar and vaginal areas as well
as the urethra and bladder. With these changes, the skin becomes thin
and more easily damaged. Atrophic vaginitis does not affect all women.
What are the signs and symptoms of Atrophic Vaginitis? Common
signs and symptoms include:
- Problems with urination, such as: burning, frequency,
urgency, loss of urine, and pain.
- Vulvar itching and/or burning.
- Bleeding/Spotting
- Pain with intercourse
How is Atrophic vaginitis diagnosed (identified)? Your
doctor or health care provider will examine the vulva and vaginal skin.
A sample of vaginal discharge may be obtained and examined to determine
if you have the changes seen with atrophic vaginitis.

The Baird's Baby Story |
 |
I have been meaning to write this for a while now. I am
very excited to share our story with everyone. I have been with the
Adler Center for about 6 years now and have since recommended my mom,
my sister, my sister in-law and several friends to the Adler Center.
We had a wonderful 5-year-old girl when my husband and I
decided to have another baby (the truth is - I talked him into another
one!!). My first daughter was unplanned, 10 weeks premature delivered
by C-Section due to pre- eclampsia. I wanted this time to be different.
We planned this pregnancy and I decided very early in my pregnancy that
I wanted to try and have my second child vaginally.

A Fairytale in Woodbridge |
 |
written by Sharon Lenton/King, CNM
In 2002, Darryl and I met at an Alexander O'Neil dinner concert in a DC
nightclub. Darryl said it was love at first sight, (and I'm very happy
to know that), but I do think that my British accent had a little to do
with it though! So, after joining his table, we all enjoyed the show
and each other's company and before we left, he asked me for my phone
number.....
......in 2003 we had arranged our dream wedding in
Jamaica for September 17th, 2004 (it had a special meaning because it
was Darryl's milestone birthday also). People were attending from
Virginia, Maryland, New York, Maine, Ohio, Texas and England.
Unfortunately, hurricane Ivan came and blew away our plans.....

Employee of the Month - Nancy Rauch, Radiology Technician and
Obstetrical Coordinator |
 |
I joined the Adler Center in 1998 as a part time
receptionist after traveling all over the United States with my
husband, Jim, who was a Civil Engineer in the Coast Guard. We spent
most of his career in San Francisco and Seattle. I obtained my
bachelor's degree from Eastern Illinois University in laboratory
medicine and hold an EMT license. I became interested in Bone Density
tests after my mother passed away from Osteoporosis and I am now a
licensed radiology technician. My job is to perform Bone Density tests
in our Woodbridge office as well as verifying insurances and setting up
payment plans for our obstetrical patients.
My husband and I have two children, Rory, who has a
Master's Degree in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University and
Erin, who graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in Hospitality and
Hotel Management. In our spare time, we play bridge, travel and walk
our dog "Pugsley" and cat "Princess".
