    Natural Family Planning

    written by Monica Byrne,CNM

There are days when a healthy woman is fertile, days when she is infertile, and some days when fertility is unlikely, but possible. Understanding several basic concepts can help a couple to plan or prevent a pregnancy.

The monthly pattern that occurs regularly in most women is called the menstrual cycle. Every cycle is divided into two parts - before ovulation and after ovulation. The first part of the cycle, from the first day of menstruation to ovulation, may vary from 13 to 20 days in length. The length of the first part is not only different from one woman to another, but also can differ in some women from month to month. The second part of the cycle, from ovulation to the first day of menstruation, is about the same length in all women. The egg is released consistently 14-to-16 days before the onset of menstruation, regardless of the length of a woman's menstrual cycle.

Women's Health Seminar - Labor and Delivery Question and Answer Session

Monica Byrne, CNM will be discussing what you should do to prepare for your labor and delivery. The seminar will be held on Wednesday, April 20 in our Woodbridge office from 6:30pm-7:30pm. This will be a question and answer session - be sure to bring a list of questions you would like to discuss. We do have limited time so remember to keep your questions brief. Bring your labor partner!

    Light refreshments will be served.

    Our Exciting Natural Childbirth Experience

    written by Karen Rivers

Going through labor for the first time was an unforgettable experience that I have learned from. I prepared myself for childbirth by completing a Lamaze session, and also reading lots and lots of very detailed literature. However, my mind was already set on breathing through every contraction and receiving the wonderful Epidural that you always hear about.

I remember sitting on the couch with my husband, who was timing my inconsistent contractions, and wondering if this was really it just false labor. I must have started timing these painful things around 8 PM on the evening of June 27th, 2002. I distinctly remember my Lamaze instructor telling us to stay at home as long as you can, because if you're only 2-4 centimeters dilated then chances are you might get sent back home. Well, I took that advice maybe a little too seriously! By 11 PM, I just couldn't take it anymore. We jumped into the car, and of course, once I got into the car my contractions were consistently coming every 3 minutes. So, my husband hurried all the way to Potomac Hospital, which was a good 25 minutes from home.

In April - Automated Appointment Reminder System

The Adler Center will be testing an automated appointment reminder system within the next two weeks. We are hoping to reduce the busy signals and hold times that our patients may experience. The appointment reminder system is set up to automatically call our patients the evening before their scheduled appointment. The system is voice activated. If it doesn't hear a voice, it will continue to call your number until it can leave a message. The message will provide you with the day, date and time of your appointment. You also have the ability to confirm your appointment at that time.

We are dedicated to making your experience with the Adler Center an enjoyable one. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this new system, please contact our office.

Employee of the Month - Terri Melville, Billing Supervisor

Before joining the Adler Center three years ago, I was a stay-at-home mom of five children. I jumped at the opportunity to work at the Adler Center due to the fact I have always loved the medical field. Being a mother, the OB/GYN practice fascinates me. I enjoy sharing stories of my past pregnancies with the obstetrical patients.

As Billing Supervisor with the Adler Center, my job is to help our patients understand their accounts with our office. I am always available to assist in any way I can. Knowing how important it is for healthcare during pregnancy I am grateful to be part of such a wonderful group of physicians and midwives who dedicate such a large amount of the lives for the welfare of their patients.
